Alyah
A few years ago, I used to go out into the street with a Star of David around my neck. I was proud to be called Esther Vidal, and I never lowered my voice to say my name. We weren’t in danger in the city. Nor were we mugged leaving school, synagogue or home. Calling someone a “dirty Jew” was taboo. I didn’t think there could be demonstrations against Jews in Paris. To tell the truth, I wouldn’t even have imagined that you could hear, during a demonstration:« Death to the Jews!»
A young woman, two children, two loves. Fear, desire, hope, the temptation to leave France and make « aliyah ».
